Craig C. Mello, Ph.D., 2006 Nobel Prize Laureate for Physiology or Medicine, Codirector of the RNA Therapeutics Institute and Professor in the Program in Molecular Medicine at the University of Massachusetts Medical School, USA
Craig C. Mello is an American developmental biologist and Nobel Laureate, who helped discoverRNA interference(RNAi). Along with his colleagueAndrew Fire, he developed gene knockouts using RNAi. In 2006 Mello won theNobel Prize in Physiology or Medicinefor his contribution to the discovery of RNAi. Mello also contributed to developmental biology, focusing on generegulation, cell signaling, cleavage formation, germline determination, cell migration, cell fate differentiation, and morphogenesis.
RNAi has proved a valuable research tool, enabling scientists to block genes in order to uncover the basic functions and roles of genes in disease. RNAi can also be used to develop new treatments for a number of diseases, includingAIDS,cancer, andhepatitis. Following the RNAi publication, Mello focused his research on applying the silencing technique to the study of embryonic cell differentiation inC. elegans. In 2000 Mello was awarded the title ofHoward HughesMedical Investigator because of his significant contributions toscience.
