Prof. Young-Woo Son

Korea Institute of Advanced Study

主讲人简介/Biography:

Prof. Young-Woo Son obtained his Ph. D. from Department of Physics, Seoul National University, 2004. And, he moved to Department of Physics, University of California at Berkeley as a postdoctoral fellow and spends two and a half years there. After then, he moved back to Korea and has been a professor of computational sciences at Korea Institute for Advanced Study since August of 2008. He is a awardee of Young Scientist Prize of IUPAP (International Union of Physics and Applied Physics), C8 Semiconductor Commission. He has published noteworthy papers in the field of theoretical and computational studies on low dimensional solids.

讲座摘要/Abstract:

The solid state or condensed matter physics is a relatively young sub-discipline of physics, started only about 70 years ago. It formed because of successful applications of quantum mechanics to periodic arrangement of many atoms. Computational condensed matter is also a quite young sub-discipline of the condensed matter physics, started about 40 years ago. In the beginning, there was some pessimistic view to worry that physics is lost inside computer. However, nowadays, the computational understanding of materials becomes an indispensable machinery in researches thanks to developments of effective theories of many-body quantum physics and enormous increases of computational resources. Regardless of its impressive success, the computational research on solids is still caught between the Scylla of its own inevitable inaccuracy and the Charybdis of lacks of computing powers. In this talk, I will display history and my experience in the field and discuss its future roles in shaping condensed matter physics and sciences in general.
