Fei Sun, postdoctoral fellow, Duke University

Fei Sun attended Hong Kong University of Science and Technology and completed a Bachelor of Science in Life Science in 2014. She then entered graduate school at Duke University through the Developmental and Stem Cell Biology Training Program and joined the lab of Dr. Kenneth Poss from the Department of Cell Biology to study the interaction of multiple organ systems during the process of tissue regeneration in zebrafish. She demonstrated the involvement of distant tissue and circulating system in zebrafish heart regeneration and identified a novel class of enhancer elements that segregates remote tissue responses from local responses and stratifies long- and short-range gene functions during tissue regeneration. In 2022, she completed her Ph.D. and continued her research in the Poss lab as a postdoctoral fellow.  She is interested in establishing new toolkits and technical platforms to determine the impact of remote organs on tissue regeneration capacity and elucidate the interorgan communication network during tissue regeneration.

讲座摘要/Abstract:

Regeneration is widely investigated as a local response to tissue damage or loss. In addition to triggering local repair events, acute trauma also impacts structures distant from the injury, for instance by triggering the production of circulating factors. To study the responses of remote tissues to injury and regeneration, we generated genome‐wide profiles from zebrafish brains and kidneys following experimental cardiac damage. Distant trauma induced tissue-specific gene expression responses and triggered distinct genome-wide chromatin structural alterations in both tissues. Using the transcription factor gene cebpd as a case example, we revealed the dedicated regulatory mechanisms that distinguish short‐ and long‐range gene expression responses to injury and mediate long-distance regulation of organism-wide physiology after tissue damage.
