Ultrafast Biological Dynamics for Protein Properties and Functions

讲座摘要/Abstract:

The understanding of biological dynamics on the atomic level is essential to their properties and functions. For the past two decades, we have integrated femtosecond spectroscopy, molecular biology, and computational calculations to unravel the entire dynamics and molecular mechanisms for a series of important biological systems. Here, we will give three examples of photoenzyme, photoreceptor and protein hydration. We completely mapped out their entire dynamic evolution in real time and revealed all elementary steps for enzyme catalysis, the primary dynamics for initial signaling, and the protein-water coupled motions for protein stability and flexibility. With the femtosecond timescales, we “watch” and even control protein function with unprecedented detail.
