主讲人/Speaker

Jun Zhang is jointly appointed as Professor of Physics and Mathematics at NYU and NYU Shanghai. He is also a Global Network Professor at NYU. Since 2001, he has been the Co-Director of the Applied Math Laboratory at the Courant Institute of Mathematical Sciences. He holds a Ph.D. in Physics from the Niels Bohr Institute at the University of Copenhagen, and he is now an elected Fellow of the American Physical Society (APS) and a member of the Academia Europaea (MAE).

讲座摘要/Abstract:

Fluid structure interactions take place at vastly different temporal and spatial scales. In this talk, we will discuss two extreme cases when mobile structures interact with their surrounding fluids at either micrometer scale or over thousands of kilometers. The related experimental research is inspired by the swimming bacteria in fluid and by the surprising super-rotation of the inner core of the Earth. The lessons learned from these experimental studies might help us better understand the natural phenomena we observe.
