主讲人/Speaker

Zhi-zhong Xing (邢志忠) is currently a professor at the Institute of High Energy Physics (IHEP), Chinese Academy of Sciences. He received his bachelor's degree from Peking University in 1987, and his PhD degree from the IHEP in 1993. He was a postdoctoral fellow at Munich University from October 1993 to March 1996 and Nagoya University from April 1996 to March 1998, and a research associate at Munich University from April 1998 to March 2001, before joining the IHEP as a faculty member. He has been working in the field of theoretical particle physics, and made some notable contributions to neutrino physics.

讲座摘要/Abstract:

Some of the symmetries in physics, which can be regarded as a reflection of the existence of something unobservable or the form invariance of a physical law under a certain transformation, may dictate the very form of the corresponding interactions. One of the most successful examples of this kind is the Yang-Mills theory, proposed by Chen-Ning Yang and Robert Mills exactly seventy years ago today. This lecture is intended to introduce the spirits of both Hermann Weyl's Abelian gauge symmetry and the non-Abelian Yang-Mills fields in an easy-going way, supplemented by some historical stories and personal points of view. Brief comments on the Higgs mechanism and the standard electroweak theory of particle physics are also given.
